Project Pinta is a three phase restoration plan that aims to restore the Pinta tortoise to its native habitat on Pinta Island in the Galapagos. The introduction of an invasive goat species by humans led to the destruction of the Pinta Island environment. The goats ate all of the vegetation, thereby abolishing the natural, unique habitat on Pinta. This occurred on a few of the islands, however on Pinta, the damage was so severe that it was thought to have driven the Pinta Island tortoise to extinction. Thankfully, Project Islabela, part one of Project Pinta was instated to eradicate the goats and restore the habitat. Come back next week to find out more about Project Isabela and the future of the Pinta tortoise.
